Allan Henry Spencer Edwards (1905 – 1983) was born in Newport, Wales. He grew up in Newport and as a boy always had a love of art. He got married and worked in London. At the same time, he studied art in the evenings and joined the Langham and later the Wapping art group.
He would often be seen in some small village or on a lane with his easel set up, smoking his pipe and sketching or painting.
Allan exhibited his pictures at many of London’s galleries over the years. His ambition was to get accepted to have a picture hung at the National Gallery which was a very prestigious show every year.
In 1958 he was accepted into the Summer Salon Exhibition at the Royal Institute with a picture entitled “Sunlight after Storm” This picture depicted Waltham Abbey, Walthamstow, Essex. It was painted from a fleeting impression obtained on a very stormy July afternoon.
He mainly painted landscapes and seascapes but he was also a proficient portrait artist and did a number of private commissions over the years.
After moving from London to Essex in 1960 and later moving to Weston-S-Mare to retire he would teach art in colleges and schools at evening classes.
From time to time, even in retirement, he would exhibit his pictures at art shows and would be involved in his art right up to his death in 1983.
